There was, yes, disagreement, because I said there was blood in my hair in the essay, they said there wasnt enough blood or there wasnt blood or something. Seeing other students consult their parents for minor decisions made her feel left out; she avoided telling people she had been in foster care before college. I think they do have a richer experience if they have more diversity around them, but that is more the point. Im part of a wrongful death lawsuit that was filed in August, 2020. Mackenzie Fierceton has lost her Rhodes Scholarship and her University of Pennsylvania master's degree is being held after an anonymous tipster called out alleged inaccuracies in her school and scholarship applications.NY Post photo composite RG: or in graduate school. And I think psychologically one way people feel safer about it is to say: No, that happens to other people. RG: Talk just a little bit about that case . Its just so obvious that you fit the criteria for low-income, but it seems like they feel like you dont fit it in the spirit of how they want it. [2], Fierceton was accepted at the University of Pennsylvania (commonly known as Penn) on a full scholarship, arranged through QuestBridge. So they heard from her and immediately they call you into a meeting with the deputy provost at the time, Beth Winkelstein . [2] Morrison's bond was originally set at $40,000, but lowered to $5,000 over prosecutors' strenuous objections. RG: And it has, has she stuck by that? By those standards, the standards of real family, not one person I'm related to by blood meets those requirements or even comes close." Raised in Chesterfield, Missouri, a West County suburb of St. Louis, she attended and graduated from the Whitfield School in Creve Coeur. And again, people, including Penn administrators, have the perception of I think the stereotype and my friend Anea Moore, whos a Rhodes Scholar and graduate of Penn who founded Penn first or co-founded it had a really great quote in The New Yorker about we arent all, quote-unquote something along the lines of like impoverished, inner city kids who go to crumbling public schools as the wider media portrays us to be. The award brings the number of Penn Rhodes Scholars to 31 since the scholarship's inception in 1902. But that was definitely a driving force for why I decided, ultimately, to withdraw because I felt like: OK, federal prison is no joke. Margulis later told The New Yorker that he had been telling the prosecutor repeatedly that Fierceton "had no credibility and made all of this up", the same theme as Morrison's many arguments in person and over the phone to other Whitfield parents. Fierceton's mother's supporters have maintained that her daughter was an emotionally manipulative girl who injured herself and fabricated other aspects of the abuse in order to become a more appealing candidate for admission to an Ivy League college such as the University of Pennsylvania. verbally. MF: So thats the background of him. The situation was further complicated by a lack of cell phone service in the basement, requiring students to team up and verbally relay information from the 9-1-1 operator to a professor performing CPR on Driver and back to a student posted just outside the door. And what area of it are you going to explore with your Ph.D.? And I told them I only have a half-hour, because Im working, Im in class, and were going to go through all of this. So Im not sure if it was Penn who reached out to her or vice versa, which I think is also an important question in all of this. [1]:64, In February 2015, before presenting the evidence against Morrison to a grand jury for an indictment, the St. Louis County district attorney's office dropped all the charges against Morrison over Brandt's objections. And so I did definitely have that kind of like: I have no idea what else is going to convince these people. [1]:115 As to her previous involvement with the child welfare system, Penn says Fierceton told them she was not certain, but she was referring either to the guardian ad litem appointed for her during her parents' divorce or an earlier incident when she and her biological parents were still living in Connecticut. Fierceton said later that she had never used the word "poor" to describe herself or her childhood. As in Fierceton's case, it took an hour to remove Driver from the building. RG: who was, I believe now, the acting provost. "[1]:119, Dismissal of mother's charges and expurgation of records, Role in wrongful death suit against university, In its response to Fierceton's suit, Penn quotes Fierceton as telling police as soon as they entered her hospital room after her later injury about her diary and that it would tell them everything they would need to know. And what area of it are you going to explore with your Ph.D.? [2] Her father, Billy Terrell,[1] had been an actor in soap operas. The university, in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, referred to Mackenzies mother as an accomplished physician and claimed that a court had found her allegations not to be credible. Fierceton is the 31st Penn student to be chosen as a Rhodes Scholar since the distinguished program's start in 1902. And then I remembered that my teacher had told me to write a gratitude list. And its striking to see just the continuing to push of what happened. Deconstructed[emailprotected]theintercept.com, Photo illustration: Soohee Cho for The Intercept; Getty Images, AP, This weeks guest on Deconstructed is Mackenzie Fierceton, who was the subject of, The Philadelphia Inquirer erroneously wrote that she had grown up poor. In addition to the complaint she had made against Lovelace, a similar complaint to police that her mother was abusing prescription drugs also did not yield any evidence to support it. Well, Mackenzie, thank you so much for joining me and sharing your story. And did you find this after The New Yorker article was published? [3], Before that happened, Fierceton withdrew from the scholarship on her own. And still, it was just like: Nope. Interesting. And at the time I was more in panic mode than like, let me step back and look at this logically, theres absolutely no case, this is an intimidation tactic to try to silence me and sign this NDA and withdraw from the Rhodes and agree to whatever terms they wanted me to agree to you. Its practically half of Americans, or more. RG: And one of the main things they pointed to was that she had gone to this private school . RG: Mhmm. Its a very under-researched field. And with that, like you said, notion of: Well, theres no way that you went to private school and all of this could have still happened, or that you could be low-income now and this idea that socioeconomic status is permanent. And it started with, this paragraph-and-a-half of waking up in the hospital and then, like you said, looking at my face, not recognizing myself, and kind of describing what I felt like and what the room looked like. [Laughs.]. A week later, Brandt interviewed Morrison again at the police station; this time she said that her daughter had injured herself, saying "I guess she has more problems than I thought." And then the other question was: Are you the first in your family to attend college? Morrison was arrested and charged with felony child abuse and third-degree assault (a misdemeanor) in the incident that had led to Fierceton's hospitalization, and an additional felony child abuse count for the incident that had triggered the DSS caseworker's visit earlier in the year; the arrest warrant alleged that Morrison had deliberately slammed her daughter's head into the table. I was a teenager and I was in the hospital and I didnt have any perspective. The court granted Morrison a protection order against her former husband; Fierceton had no relationship with him from that time onward. Her sister also wrote White as well, alleging that Fierceton "deliberately tried to frame Carrie and planted 'evidence' around the house, including her own blood. If youre an independent student, then you should check yes to both boxes. And thats actually one of the things that, if there was any doubt whatsoever about this story, in some ways it was settled by that. But I guess I cant say for sure. I didnt encounter many of them in the two years that I was living in foster families. The 23-year-old planned to use. And even now, The New Yorker quotes a lot from my childhood journals describing my abuse. I wrote a poem about the actual what the message was, which is so cheesy and Im cringing at my 17-year-old self [laughs], but it was about the healing power of gratitude. Medical records, records from child welfare services, corroborating letters from detectives and lawyers and elementary, middle, and high school teachers, childhood friends, professors basically everyone who had known me. You know, in my personal experience, there were not very many kids who came from a background like me. And its no offense its not like the most profound . But teachers noticed that Fierceton often seemed physically uncomfortable in her mother's presence, and a close friend noted that she was often injured. DSS had originally planned to place Fierceton with one of her mother's sisters but put her in foster care after Whitfield's principal warned the agency that Fierceton would not be safe with them. [Laughs.] One of them, to me, felt pretty clear that it was probably from someone in my biological family, because it had photos of me; it had very specific information that very few people would have and I dont think many people would have random childhood photos of me. And if you havent already, please subscribe to the show so you can hear it every week. And it became pretty clear to me that they had spoken to Carrie and or seen medical records. The dean of SP2 told Penn otherwise, but Fierceton noted that the school had never shared what its definition was. Like one of them was describing a biological child in a house as another foster child, and something about a half-brother or something. What were those and how were those errors kind of deployed against you? Penn officials, of course, have said the interview was appropriate. She definitely asked some questions about it. And I asked again and just said: Ive had different experiences of harassment for the last four years at Penn. MF: Yeah, it was, things like that where I simplified all of these foster kids that youre living with a biological family who have kids, which I would say are foster siblings. Penn acknowledged that, for that reason, it could not state definitely that those events did not take place but still, "the way [she] presents this information invites the reader to speculate when she herself states she does not have a clear recollection of the nature of this event, if it occurred. And its striking to see just the continuing to push of what happened. The notation in her transcript remains. RG: Right. Nothing I have is persuasive to these people. And thats an unfortunate reality so many survivors experience, not having a lot of documentation. Mackenzie Fierceton was named Penn's 2021 Rhodes Scholar. She entered foster care only at the age of 17, after making a complaint of abuse against Dr.. And one of the main things they pointed to was that she had gone to this private school . She had had a fairly upper middle class life yet was working at multiple fast food restaurants and barely getting by. And I just want to read this for people. "I really don't have words,'" she told a mentor at the Penn Women's Center. [2] When she turned 18, she formally left foster care[d] but continued living with the family whose home she was in. This definition resembles the one used in the federal Higher Education Act, which says that first-generation status depends on the education level of a parent whom a student regularly resided with and received support from.. If you want to give us additional feedback, email us at [emailprotected] Thanks so much! RG: And what was the first-generation community like on campus? And its no offense its not like the most profound . At first she explained Fierceton's injuries as either having been caused by an intruder or somehow self-inflicted, then said her daughter had fallen downstairs while she was trying to help her get some chewing gum out of her hair. [2] Katie Couric had Fierceton as a guest on her podcast a week later. on about your day, ask yourself: How likely is it that the story you just read would have been produced by a different news outlet if The Intercept hadnt done it? When I came to Penn and saw all of these students who were living that life, there was a sense of community and solidarity amongst us, which was very powerful for me because I just felt so out of place. Have you ever heard of her case? There were some pretty basic errors, such as my name, my birth name, and my birth place, and claiming that I didnt have a sibling, that I wasnt low-income, a lot of facts that were pretty easily disputed. After her mother left, Fierceton got out of bed, found a spare set of keys and drove herself to school. Fierceton considered dropping out, but "if I truly can't do this, where am I supposed to return to? The wellness director told her she would have to notify the state's Department of Social Services (DSS) of the incident. But Mackenzie Fierceton is not a liar. And we entered the meeting and it immediately felt really hostile to me. Consider what the world of media would look like without The Intercept. [2], During her high school years, Fierceton has alleged that her mother subjected her to emotional and physical abuse, the latter enough on more than one occasion to require hospitalization. MF: And its mentioned briefly. And then it just launched into the first half being a line-by-line it felt like interrogation of my applications. MF: Yeah. She also alleged that Penn had on many occasions failed to follow its own disciplinary policies in its investigation of her.[16]. But afterwards she was anxious enough about how her mother might react to remain on the other side of the kitchen counter island from Morrison while they talked in the kitchen, "bracing for impact", she wrote in her diary. I took photos of the building and sent it to them, and I was connecting them with different people who were in my class, who were in his class. [2], Fierceton shared the information she had with Logan, who in turn took it to a law firm that investigated further. I was like: Great. She retained two lawyers to represent her pro bono; they talked to Morrison themselves, who told them she still loved her daughter and wanted her to come home. RG: That was Mackenzie Fierceton and thats our show. RG: And so if its a well-educated white girl from a private school, thats way too close to home for a lot of these elites. Its a very different lifestyle. RG: Did they make that threat in writing or was that . And youre getting instruction from a university official that that's how you're supposed to fill it out, that's what the definition says online. [9][3], In her sophomore year, Fierceton, already majoring in political science,[3] decided to pursue social work as a career, with the goal of being a voice for children in foster care like the ones she had come to know. RG: That they would forward charges to the federal government of wire fraud. Theres no cell phone reception in the basement. [2], Brandt noted that Morrison never asked about, or expressed concern for, her daughter's well-being. Mhmm. Why were you in the hospital that long? And I suspected that it was about this anonymous email. Enough bruises? She shared with the former screenshots of online chats and printouts of emails with representatives of the, The Rhodes Trust report found that the Penn police had no records of any calls to them from Fierceton about this. Im part of a wrongful death lawsuit that was filed in August, 2020. She is poor, but she has not been poor for long enough. Mackenzie Fierceton was deposed after seeking justice for a mature student, Cameron Driver, 38. Did she lie? And: Did you report what was going on to your school? And then throughout the now a year and a half process [laughs] of different sort of invented processes that happened, eventually the university was like: OK, I guess shes low-income. [2], Fierceton moved into the first of several foster homes, with one other foster sibling and two biological children of the foster parents. And then throughout the now a year and a half process [laughs] of different sort of invented processes that happened, eventually the university was like: OK, I guess shes low-income. And so was it later, in a different conversation where they asked about the line in the essay about not being able to recognize yourself or is there some illusion to that in the transcript that you found? [2] Winkelstein, who has a Ph.D. in bioengineering and has studied injuries,[3] then proceeded to interrogate Fierceton at length about her abuse and hospitalization, in a manner that led Fierceton to believe that not only did Winkelstein doubt her story but had spoken with Morrison. ", "Inside Mackenzie Fierceton's ongoing legal battle with the University", "Mackenzie Fierceton Sets the Record Straight on Losing a Rhodes Scholarship Over Accusations of 'Dishonesty', "Penn community rallies in support of former Rhodes Scholar Mackenzie Fierceton", "Universities must stop fetishizing trauma", https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mackenzie_Fierceton&oldid=1138496124, controversy over representation of childhood and abuse, This page was last edited on 10 February 2023, at 00:35. Right. Michael Hayes, who had prosecuted Morrison, told the Chronicle that "The more I learned, the less certain I became about what really happened. There were so many there are, I guess I should say so many moving pieces. Is that just an interpretation or did they say anything that suggested to you that the fact that you had gone to a private school and grown up in an upper-middle-class situation meant that you could never at any point consider yourself low-income? I really appreciate it. It was: Shes a spoiled little brat. She thought that he had been very quickly removed from the building. Anything in particular jump out at you after having read back over that transcript? But when you're filling out a box where it's "yes" or "no" and there's no more information or "kind of!" That is when I would trace it back to. "[2], Fierceton was one of 15 freshmen made Civic Scholars, a program focused on social justice and community service, with an emphasis on confronting the intersections of identity and privilege. And Im glad that people are having the kinds of systemic discussions that are so key to all of this. Ultimately she decided to apply for the scholarship, in which she proposed to expand on the subject of her undergraduate thesis, the intertwining of the foster care and juvenile justice systems, to "continue to try to move forward in my life. [2], In July the OSC concluded its investigation with a 31-page report sent to provost Wendell Pritchett examining Fierceton's background more extensively than the Rhodes Trust had.
